Meet the Conductor of Thomond Wind Ensemble

Dr. Andrew Jordan from Limerick City is an educator, community musician, conductor and researcher. From an early age, Andrew began tuition on the trumpet and has been a member of many local and national ensembles. He is currently a member of the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Adult Youth Orchestra, Limerick Philharmonic Orchestra, Limerick City Big Band and the University of Limerick Orchestra.

Since 2019, Dr. Jordan has been fully immersed in his role as a music teacher with the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, based at Limerick Prison. His dedication to music education traces back to 2010 when he co-founded the Redemptorist Centre of Music in Limerick City. At the RCM, Dr. Jordan not only conducts the RCM Concert Band but also provides comprehensive tuition in all brass instruments and music theory.  Additionally, he conducts the well-known St. Johns Brass and Reed Band in Limerick. Dr. Jordan’s influence in band education extends across multiple counties, as he has developed band programmes in Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, and Dublin. Prior to his current role, Andrew served as the director of Newpark Music Centre in Dublin, a prestigious institution renowned as one of the largest private music schools in the capital. His passion for spreading music education globally is evident through his previous endeavours in delivering music education and community music programs in Zambia, the Philippines, and Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Jordan earned his Ph.D. in Music Education from Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, focusing his research on the impact of Music Generation Limerick City in cultivating Communities of Musical Practice. In addition to his doctoral degree, Dr. Jordan holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care (LIT) and a Master of Arts in Community Music (IWAMD, UL). Recently, he expanded his expertise by completing a Graduate Diploma in Adult and Further Education (MIC).  Andrew serves as a research supervisor at the Marino Institute of Education, Dublin. Andrew’s expertise is highly sought-after nationwide, as he fulfils roles as an adjudicator, examiner, conductor, and music education consultant.

Andrew has studied conducting with Dr. Mark Stickney (US) and has attended masterclasses and workshops with Mark Heron (UK), Sir. Timothy Reynish (UK), Robert Houlihan (IRE), Dr. Geoffrey Spratt (IRE), Clark Rundell (UK), Ian Porthouse (UK), Bjorn Sagstad (NOR), among others.  In addition to Andrews regular conducting duties he has been a guest conductor with the Dublin Concert Band, St. Patricks Brass Band (Galway), Newpark Concert Orchestra (Dublin) and previous conductor of the Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band and Ennis Brass Band.
