Discover Thomond Wind Ensemble

Our Story and Mission

The Thomond Wind Ensemble is a newly formed collective of 60 talented musicians from across the Midwest region, united by a passion for wind band music. The ensemble originated from a desire to create a platform for local musicians to showcase their skills at an advanced level and foster a sense of community through the joy of music. Under the skilled direction of local musician, educator and conductor Dr. Andrew Jordan, the ensemble is poised to present inspiring programmes that demonstrates the immense talent of Limerick and the surrounding areas. The ensemble’s name ‘Thomond’ derives from the name of the ancient kingdom of Limerick, Clare and Tipperary representing the various regions members of the band come from.

The Thomond Wind Ensemble logo is a creative fusion of music and local heritage, using the imagery of a stone bridge to represent the band. Each section of the ensemble is depicted as a “stone” within the structure of the bridge, symbolizing the strength and unity of the group. The formation of these musical “stones” subtly shapes a bridge arch, which becomes especially clear when isolating the first arch section—where the outline of a traditional stone bridge emerges naturally. This bridge represents the Thomond bridge located a few hundred yards from where we rehearse. This design not only ties into the ensemble’s name and regional identity but also reflects how each member and section supports the greater whole, much like the stones in an arch. The conductor is located under the bridge. Traditionally the bridge maker was often put under the bridge he constructed to show his confidence in his design much like the conductor demonstrating the pride and sense of collaboration with the wind ensemble.
